BET Did Not Come to Play This Year

Every year at the end of June, the Black family reunion (in homes and on Twitter) comes together to watch the BET Awards. It's the time for the old school and new school, mamas, nieces, aunties, and uncles to come together in common space and have a great Black time. Throughout the four hours of the show (it felt particularly longer this year), here are my favorite parts of the night.

Bruno Mars & All His Magic

Bruno Mars has been riding a great wave since the release of his latest album 24K Magic. So it's of no surprise that he opened the awards with a swagger filled performance of Perm. Between his flawless vocals, smooth choreo, and his taunting of the cellphone laced crowd, Bruno started the show off right.

MIGOS!

Everyone's favorite Trap Trio brought the house (and everyone's watching) to their feet! What started as a rendition of "Congratulations" with Post Malone was redirected to an ice cold. puffy coat and scarf, performance of "Bad and Boujee". By the time they proceeded into another hit "T-Shirt", everybody in the house was turned all the way up and every person on camera knew the lyrics bar for bar. In addition to being awarded Best Rap Gorup, it was a great night for Migos.

Kung Fu Kenny + Mask Off

When Future came out to his Blade/Anime inspired set, it was to no shock that he had a bedazzled Bane mask on to eventually, take off. In the back of my mind, I was certainly hoping for Kendrick to hop out and my hopes were answered. Kendrick and Future played off of each other well-- Kendrick in his true full out rap-every-single-bar performance and Future's two-step bop complimented well for a great performance.

Chance The Humanitarian

I don't think I've ever seen a crowd so unanimously proud of a person. Over the last year, Chance's career has catapulted him into superstardom and BET did a great job in its recognition of it. In addition to being a great artist and performer, Chance has ensured that he gives back tenfold to the community that brought him up. With his non-profit Social Works, student talent showcase Open Mike, and his 1 million dollar donation to Chicago Public Schools, he earned this award a couple times over. Complete with a heartfelt message from our "forever First Lady" Michelle Obama and Chance's call-out speech, it's safe to say Chance won the night.

Remy Wins!

Remy went all the up with winning Best Female Rap Artist against her recent rival Nicki Minaj, promptly ending her 7 year winning streak. It's a new age for lady rappers making themselves present in the game again and Remy holds back no bars. In the midst of her acceptance speech, I jumped out my seat when she started rapping bars from her diss track "SHEther". Needless to say, female rap is back. Go Remy!

SANG HONEY!

Speaking of being back, Xscape came through with the same vocals they had our mama's singing their lives out to in 1997. While Twitter watching, I noticed so many laughable moments of "Tiny sings?!" that brought me to crying laughing tears. Despite the youngins being a little confused, my family was in the house two-stepping and karaoke singing to all our favorite Xscape hits. On top of them, Auntie Mary came out and reminded us to love ourselves (and her outfit was "my auntie that is always gone COUTURE!). In tribute to George Michael, we also got a beautiful serenade from the timeless El DeBarge. My favorite vocal performance of the night undoubtedly came from Ms. Tamar Braxton. Not only did she have the securest wig in the house but she SANG that house ALL THE WAY DOWN. The Braxton family has some of the most untouchable vocals in the industry and Tamar reminded us that she is more than her signature sass, but a vocalist to recognize.

I'M ONLY STILL HERE FOR SZA

Despite BET and their many technical issues throughout the night, SZA and her debut BET performance was one to watch. Sis had her "Love Galore" vocals and sways ready to swoon the crowd and viewers; and that she did. I, personally, have had this album on repeat since the night it dropped and after sitting through a 4 hour night, I was ready for sis to carry me away. After shamelessly singing along to "Love Galore", I was more than ready to croon out "The Weekend" right along with her and Keyshia Cole (funny she performed that right after Tamar's song). Her performance was a great step forward in BET's embracing of the "alt-R&B" wave that's unfolding and SZA dealt us all the vibes we tuned in to see. Go Gina!

New Edition Did Not Miss A Beat

Of course, I had to save the best for last. Beginning with the tribute from the cast of the biopic, New New Edition as I dubbed knew what they came to do. The youngest versions of them hit every single shuffle they practiced for the film and carried into the older versions of NNE gracefully. Most notably, Luke James' tribute performance of "My, My, My" had all us watching sharing the same sentiments. For a brief moment, I was wondering 1) why I hadn't heard certain hits and 2) why New Edition let the young boys show them up; I was very wrong.

In their 39 years of being New Edition, they hit the stage in their best all-whites and hit every routine like it was 1987. AND I LIVED. In all honesty, we could've stood for New Edition to close the never-ending show. Regardless, they had 40 years worth of dancing and singing along and put on an amazing show.
