Girls Trip Is EVERYTHING

Source: IMDB

On Friday,  my squad and I went out amongst many to flood the theatre on opening day to see "Girls Trip" and it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! This all-star cast (including the very gorgeous Kofi Siriboe) delivered the FUNNIEST movie I have seen this year. Everyone in the theatre was crying laughing from literally beginning to end and I was so full in Black woman joy upon leaving the show. And with a whopping $30.4 million opening weekend, making it the the largest opening weekend for a  live-action comedy of 2017, it is unanimous that this film is the star of the summer.

In speaking of stars of the summer, one has to mention the force of funny that is Tiffany Haddish; she certainly shined bright amongst a cast of known stars. After seeing her hilarious story on the Jimmy Kimmel show, I was very prepared to be cackling the entire movie. There was not a scene in the film that I was not folded over laughing with bulging eyes at Tiffany on screen and I loved EVERY moment of it. Her raunchy, big personality, and  out-of-pocket jokes (that I'm sure HAD to be some form of fluid improv) kept all laughs with her from start to end. Tiffany has been into comedy her entire life (check out her People interview here) and I am so full of joy for her to be getting the breakout she deserves.

In addition to being absolutely comical, this movie is very important for Black women. For one, it displays the joys of sisterhood in Black women and how essential it is to have in life. Having your girls through your highs and lows is some of, if not the best, support one can have. Secondly, this film shows Black women in a setting we don't get to see as often as we would like: joyous and carefree.

"Girls Trip" showed us four different types of Black women, the importance of togetherness among us, while giving us a moment to laugh within ourselves. In this, it is slamming Hollywood with the facing the fact that diversity is important because Black women have, and always will, deliver. Every squad deserves to laugh in Black joy to this film a couple times.
